Selection Stones and Pearls

B a s e l w o r l d S e l e c t i o n / 0 8 7 3.0/C03 E r n s t F ä r b e r The Munich-based company Ernst Färber not only looks back on a long tradition stretching to 1692, but also offers jewellery with a history. Its range includes numerous unique pieces with the charm of times gone by: one-off pieces in select quality made from platinum, gold and exclusive gemstones, primarily from the 19th and 20th centuries, but also earlier ages. The jewellery thus makes it possible to retrace the stylistic and aesthetic development of the various different eras, in which the company was active. By the way, Ernst Färber can trace its history to the first jewellers on the famous Munich Marienplatz, run by Carl Weishaupt, an ancestor of the family that currently owns the firm. Since then, the family tradition has been maintained: today, ten generations later, his great- great-great-great-great-grandson Dominik Biehler is in charge of the company. Rudolf Biehler, the father of Dominik Biehler, has long considered it to be a deplorable custom to break open antique jewellery and recut the old stones contained therein – because not only does this make them smaller and cause them to lose their charm, but artistic treasures are also lost as a result. He therefore works to preserve the old gems in their original beauty. Natural pearls are a further speciality of the company. This can be traced back to a specific right granted to the family: the Bavarian royal court accorded it the privilege of fishing for pearls in the rivers. This marked the beginning of a passion that continues unabated to this day. August Neresheimer, the great-grand father of Dominik Biehler, established a trading network for the spherical gems, maintaining offices in Berlin, Paris, Zurich and Amsterdam. The company soon made a name for itself internationally as a consequence. And Ernst Färber is still one of just a few companies to trade in genuine natural pearls. These are offered in numerous variations, baroque, round or droplet-shaped, drilled or undrilled, loose or worked into strings or necklaces. A broad collection of unusual diamonds and exclusive coloured gemstones such as rubies, emeralds and sapphires rounds off the range of Ernst Färber.
