s t o n e s a n d P e a r l s 1 8 6 / B a s e l w o r l d S e l e c t i o n Neli Gems Corp. is one of the largest whole­salers of Colombian emeralds in the world, but the people there maintain a friendly, low-key attitude, a legacy of the Livian family that started the business. Family patriarch Yochanan Livian started things off in Italy with his son Eli. They moved to the United States, and Eli Livian began Neli Gems in 1977. ­Tragically, Eli Livian died in an airplane crash during an emerald-buying trip to Colombia in 1990. His brothers Gabriel and Sam Livian are the company’s ­principals today, with Sam serving as president and CEO. The company still maintains an office in Colombia. Eli Livian wanted to specialise, so he chose Colombian emeralds, a decision that turned out to be a brilliant one. “It was a business decision to specialise and then diversify again,” says company ­president Sam Livian. “A good part of the business is in coloured diamonds, but the main focus has always been Colombian emeralds. I think it ebbs and wanes, ­maybe last year we were doing more Sam Livian, President of Neli Gems Corp.
