BWDN: The Chopard Manufacture was founded twenty years ago. How are you celebrating this anniversary? Karl-Friedrich Scheufele: Our exhibit looks back on developments that occurred during these two eventful decades. It can be viewed at our stand at Baselworld. Afterwards, it will travel around the world for two years. Of course, we’re also celebrating with spe- cial watches encasing movements that we designed and built ourselves, e.g. the ultra-slim and very classical L.U.C XPS 1860 with an automatic calibre and the L.U.C Perpetual Chrono, which is a totally new construction from our atel- iers. We’ve chosen Baselworld as the venue for our debut of another perpetual calendar, the L.U.C Perpetual Twin with a stainless steel case. We’re also present- ing the L.U.C Automatic in a stainless steel case. This was important to me because it enables us to offer affordably priced watches. The Chopard Manufac- ture will bring out other watches in the course of the year, including a model with a GMT function and an entirely newly engineered world-time watch. Manufacture movements were less important twenty years ago than they are today. I don’t regret a single minute! The founding of our Manufacture paid off in every respect: with regard to our inde- pendence and with regard to our know- how. We acquired tremendous expertise and achieved a new and immense verti- cal range of manufacture. I also believe that this gave our brand additional Karl-Friedrich Scheufele, Co-President Chopard. prestige, greater recognisability and enhanced credibility – three virtues which will surely pay for themselves in future. Also, our status as a manufacture gave us the basis for Fleurier Ebauches, where we now industrially fabricate several standard calibres. This is very important for us. An important calibre is currently being developed there for us: it’s a ladies’ self-winding movement for the Happy Sport, which is one of our most popular collections. The Happy Sport evolved from Happy Diamonds, an idea which now cele- brates its fortieth anniversary. Is this yet another reason to celebrate? Yes, certainly. At Baselworld, we take a retrospective look at 40 years of Happy Diamonds. The outer windows of our pavilion exhibit interesting facts about this line. Many customers are unaware that the first Happy Diamonds was a gents’ watch. The ladies’ watches followed later and this collection ulti- mately prompted Chopard to produce jewellery for it. We’re exhibiting such milestones in the Happy Diamond story at Baselworld. This anniversary also coincides with a new “TV-shaped” watch inspired by the original Happy Diamonds. We revived this shape and endowed it for the first time with differ- ently crafted Happy Diamonds. We’ve put these gems into a new setting so the diamonds are highlighted even more beautifully. Chopard’s Mille Miglia is a similarly well-known and popular line. Are there any newcomers here? Oh yes, a very big one, in fact. We’re presenting the 2016 XL Race Edition in a limited series of 1,000 timepieces. This chronograph, which alludes to a model from 1998, has a case with a diameter of 45 millimetres. Despite its large size, this watch has a totally classi- cal appearance. And another debutante ticks inside it: our own chronograph movement from Fleurier Ebauches, of which we’re equally proud. by Sabine Zwet tler by Sabine Zwet tler finest mechanical movements. Classic lines and simplicity characterise the styling, which has often been inspired by architecture. This affiliation stretches far into the past: for example, the Multifort line celebrated its 80th anni- versary last year. A reason to celebrate likewise occurs this year, when this Swiss brand fetes the 40th birthday of the Baroncelli with the launch of several new models here at Baselworld 2016. The Baroncelli Heritage, available for women and men, is the company’s slim- mest watch: the 316L stainless steel and PVD/rose gold cases are just 6.95 and 6.85 millimetres tall. Each of them surrounds a sleekly simple black or ivory-coloured dial with a finely grained surface and encases automatic calibre Mido 1192, which is based on the ETA 2892-A2 movment. Traditional embel- lishments are visible through a pane of sapphire crystal in the back of the case. 1.0, D15 1.0, A25B “The founding of our Manufacture paid off in every respect: with regard to our independ- ence and with regard to our know-how.” Baroncelli Heritage, Mido. prestige, greater recognisability and enhanced credibility – three virtues which will surely pay for themselves in future. The dynamic aesthetics and remarkable details of this sportily elegant model reflect Corum’s longstanding affiliation with the sport of sailing. The wrist- watches in this collection are instantly recognisable thanks to their distinctive dodecagonal cases and the colourful nautical flags on their dials. Now Corum christens a new member of the family: the Admiral’s Cup Legend 47 World- timer. The watch is available in two variants: one pairs a titanium case and a black dial, the other combines a titani- um and rose gold case with a dial of smoky sapphire. The back of the case, which is likewise made of smoky sap- phire, is engraved with the names of cities in the 24 time zones and their abbreviations. The translucent back reveals Calibre CO637.
