36 WATCHES DA ILY N E W S SATURDAY, MARCH 19, 2016 FREEDOM, AESTHETICS AND THE ART OF LIVING F R ANCK D UBA RR Y TALKS ABO U T HIS EP ON Y MO US BR AND’S F RENCH CULT UR AL HERI TAGE Interview by Kyra Brenzinger F rom the Age of Enlighten- ment to the French Revolu- tion, Franck Dubarry has continued to shake up the language of watchmaking with his self-titled brand. We met with this advocate of innovation who is renowned in the profession for his new ideas. BWDN: How did you come up with the idea of combining French history with the launch of a watch brand? Franck Dubarry: Since 1998, I have been spending the majority of the time in France, but I am also very attached to my roots. Whenever I travel to the United States or Argentina, I am very moved by their patriotism. Through this new brand, I wanted to promote our French heritage as a country of human rights with an unbelievably rich artistic and cultural heritage. The idea of the cam- paign is to highlight the values which inspired my creative process: freedom, aesthetics and the art of living. Was it to repeat the success you had with TechnoMarine and to launch a brand which bears your name this time? Success is about achieving your objec- tives and taking pleasure in working. A conceptualised product charms its audi- ence. I created TechnoMarine, inspired by the world of the ocean, because this is a natural element I am very familiar with. Today, I am building a brand which harbours more personal values, inherit- ed from my education, my experience and my travel. I am happy to be making a comeback in the industry and sharing some of my creativity. You are offering a double identity: Swiss Made paired with French history… In fact, I collaborate with some highly competent Swiss craftsmen and the Swiss Made label reflects the excellence of our products. However, I derive my inspiration from my roots which embody the French values of freedom, the art of living and the pleasures of modern day life. How many models are you launching at Baselworld? During the show, we will be presenting 60 models. Launched in 2015, the Crazy Balls collection includes a revolutionary complication feature and symbolises technical freedom in the form of balls which collide with one another as they follow the movement of the wrist. Add to this the Crazy Colors collection which highlights natural stones in a chrono- graph case. The exclusive Révolution Française collection embodies the free- dom of being oneself in an ever more uniform world and pays homage to mul- ti-cultural freedom with a decorative repertoire based on the emblematic style of the city of Buenos Aires (plants, cornucopias, animals). The Révolution Carénée et gravée range violates the conventional rules of the classic revolu- tion in 12 hours: GMT watches with a 24 hour dial and two time zones. The Révolution Sport range innovates with its Pop Art-inspired colours, divided into the Racer, Rider and Diver models. Which are the key coun- tries of growth for mar- keting your new brand? We have been operating on the markets of Europe and South and North America since 2015 when the brand was first launched. I spend part of my time in the United States so we have an office there and we are planning to open a showroom in Paris soon. We are also developing our network in South America. The 2016 Trofeo T-Master, Doxa. Franck Dubarry, Founder. show is our opportunity to consolidate the other markets, notably Asia, the Middle East and the countries of the East. Our revolution is well underway. T he newest timepiece of the Swiss Military by Chrono brand is a rugged limited edition (500 pieces) with innovative technolo- gy and a robust sporting design. “This is really special for us, because of its new features and functions,” says Stephan Ingold, Co-Owner of Chrono AG, which produces it, under license, for the Swiss Confederation. “We believe it is a great step for Swiss Military by Chrono.” Designed with outdoor sportsmen and adventurers in mind, the 45 mm watch has an altimeter, weather display with absolute and relative atmospheric pressure, timer, chronograph, two alarms, local time and a second time zone. A perpetual calendar and a thermometer round off the features. Red pushers give the monochrome design a striking look. An ETA multi- functional quartz movement manages the various functions. A hidden inner case back has integrated sensors (to measure air pressure or temperature); the outer case back protects the sensors. The stainless steel case, scratch- proof sapphire glass, and silicone rub- ber wrist band ensure ruggedness and suitability for outdoor use. The time- piece is water-resistant to 100 metres. On the outer case back are engraved “Official Partner of the Swiss Confed- eration” and the individual numbering up to 500. Each watch comes in a presentation box with an exclusive Swiss pocket knife. Jacques Lemans and Kevin Costner have worked together very closely for several years and our cooperation has developed into a real friendship. This makes the col- laboration much easier because we can share ideas on a personal level. We’re current- ly discussing a new collection. We have lots of ideas and we’ve already emailed sever- al sketches back and forth. The direction is clear: classical, sporty timepieces with an elegant touch. That’s Kevin’s style and it goes perfectly with Jacques Lemans. YOU ALSO COLLABORATE CLOSELY WITH ATHLETES. HOW IS THIS REFLECTED IN YOUR NEW ITEMS AT BASELWORLD? Our watches are a conglomerate of many fascinating fields. They’re inspired by superlative achievements in various athletic disciplines and by innovative materials. The sporty models for men are large and robust: these reliable models can take hard knocks without flinching. New colour combinations or coloured accents on the dials are perfect for the summer. AND YOUR LADIES’ WATCHES: WHAT ST YLE DO THEY HIGHLIGHT? They’re inspired by playful romanticism and grand Hollywood glamour. The results are gor- geous jewellery watches that primarily score points with their eye-catching bezels and dials. “Go for Gold” is the motto for the highlights in our La Passion collection. Our models are very conspicuous this spring. Design meets self-con- fidence here. Our assortment also includes sporty watches for women.
